# Quickstart

> Create a Learning Commons Platform account, set up your organization, and create an API key so you can use Knowledge Graph and Evaluators.

## What you'll do

* Create a Platform account and organization
* Invite a teammate Optional
* Create an API key for your organization
* Try the products
  * Make a request to the [Knowledge Graph REST API](https://docs.learningcommons.org/knowledge-graph/using-knowledge-graph/rest-api.md)
  * Browse datasets in the [Dataset catalog](https://platform.learningcommons.org/dataset-catalog) ↗
  * Demo evaluators in the [Evaluators Playground](https://platform.learningcommons.org/apps/evaluators/playground) ↗
  * Explore nodes in the [Knowledge Graph Explorer](https://platform.learningcommons.org/apps/knowledge-graph/explorer) ↗

## What you'll need

* Email address associated with your organization
* Teammate to invite to your organization Optional

## Steps

**1. Create your account**

Go to [**Sign up**](https://platform.learningcommons.org/login?tab=signup) ↗ and create a free Platform account.

**2. Set up your organization**

Follow the prompts to create your organization. You will automatically be added to this organization as an **Admin**.

See [Organizations](https://docs.learningcommons.org/platform/understanding-the-platform/organizations.md#send-invitation) for more information.

**3. Invite a teammate**

Optional

Go to [**Settings → Team**](https://platform.learningcommons.org/settings/team) ↗ to [send an email invitation to your teammate](https://docs.learningcommons.org/platform/understanding-the-platform/organizations.md#send-invitation).

Once your teammate [accepts the invitation](https://docs.learningcommons.org/platform/understanding-the-platform/organizations.md#accept-invitation), they will be added to your organization with the user role you assigned them.

**4. Create an API key**

Go to [**API keys**](https://platform.learningcommons.org/api-keys) ↗ and create a key with a name your team will recognize. Copy the key value and store it in a secrets manager or environment variable.

> [!NOTE]
>
> This key belongs to your newly created organization only. If you create other organizations in the future, you must generate separate API keys for them.
>
> See [API keys](https://docs.learningcommons.org/platform/using-the-platform/api-keys.md) for more information on how to use or revoke keys.

**5. Make an API request**

Make a request to the [Knowledge Graph API](https://docs.learningcommons.org/knowledge-graph/using-knowledge-graph/rest-api.md) with your API key included in the request header as `x-api-key`:

```bash theme={null}
curl -X GET \
  -H "x-api-key: YOUR_API_KEY" \
  "https://api.learningcommons.org/knowledge-graph/v0/standards-frameworks?academicSubject=Mathematics&jurisdiction=Multi-State"
```

**6. Download datasets**

Browse datasets in the [Dataset catalog](https://platform.learningcommons.org/dataset-catalog) ↗.

Click into a dataset that you are interested in (e.g. [U.S. academic standards](https://platform.learningcommons.org/dataset-catalog/us-academic-standards)) and find the subset of data you want to download (e.g. **ELA standards**).

See [Requesting access to gated data](https://docs.learningcommons.org/platform/using-the-platform/dataset-catalog.md#requesting-access-to-gated-data) for more information on how to download gated datasets.

**7. Try the products**

Go to the [Knowledge Graph Explorer](https://platform.learningcommons.org/apps/knowledge-graph/explorer) ↗ to how different data entities relate to each other.

Next, go to the [Evaluators playground](https://platform.learningcommons.org/apps/evaluators/playground) ↗ and paste in some sample informational text. Select Text Complexity evaluators, and then click **Evaluate** see how your text passage scores on various dimensions of Text Complexity.
