The Dataset catalog ↗ breaks Knowledge Graph data down into 5 thematic categories:

Standards
Learning components
Learning progressions
Curriculum
Instructional guidance

These categories contain related datasets, each of which includes one or more file downloads.

Example: The Standards group includes the U.S. academic standards dataset (among others).That dataset includes several file downloads: “Math standards”, “ELA standards”, etc.If you only need ELA standards for your use case, you can simply download the “ELA standards” file. You do not need to download the whole U.S. academic standards dataset (or the entire Knowledge Graph).

How to use the catalog

From the Dataset catalog, you can:

Download all of Knowledge Graph’s Open access datasets at once:
- nodes.jsonl - Contains Knowledge Graph entities (graph nodes)
- relationships.jsonl - Contains Knowledge Graph relationships (graph edges)
Browse datasets from different publishers to download just the dataset or file(s) relevant to your use case

Access types

Data access is scoped by organization. Switching organizations may change which data is accessible to you and your team members.

A dataset includes one or more file downloads. Data access is granted by file, so a dataset can be fully Open, fully Gated, or a mix of both Open and Gated.

	Requires a license agreement with the publisher, who reviews requests, sets licensing terms, and may charge fees

Downloading open data

Find the open download file

In the Dataset catalog ↗, open a dataset that includes open download files.Reference the Knowledge Graph datasets for detailed schema information.

For open datasets and open download files, download the listed JSONL files and query them locally. See Local files for file format details and example queries.

Requesting access to gated data

Admin only

Request access now so that publishers can begin reviewing your use case.Downloads become available in Fall 2026.

To access gated datasets or files, your organization may need to sign a licensing agreement with the publisher, who reviews your request and negotiates licensing terms directly. Admins can go to the Dataset catalog ↗ to start this request process. Collaborators cannot submit their own access requests, but they can see the status of submitted requests.

Find the gated download file

In the Dataset catalog ↗, open a dataset that includes gated download files. Mixed datasets show which files are open and which require a request.

Create the request

Complete the request form.The publisher will use this information to evaluate your organization’s use case and decide whether to grant access to the requested data.

Verify organization details

If your organization has not verified this information yet, you will be prompted to verify organization details like name, domain, size, etc.Review all details carefully – if you submit a request with incorrect information, you will need to contact support@learningcommons.org ↗ to fix the issue.

Share contact information

Submit your contact information, as well as the contact information of someone who can negotiate and sign the license agreement with the publisher.

Verify domain

If your organization has not verified its domain yet, you will be taken to the Organization settings to verify your domain. You will be prompted to copy a provided host and value, and then paste them into a TXT record in your domain provider’s settings.This process verifies that you are associated with your organization and ensures that no one else will be able to use your domain with Learning Commons.Return to Organization settings and click Start checking to finalize verification.

It may take up to 72 hours for your TXT record changes to take effect. Contact support@learningcommons.org ↗ if you are experiencing issues.

Publisher reviews request

The data publisher will review your request and may reach out to you to negotiate licensing terms.Contact the publisher directly for questions about licensing.

Download

Once the publisher formally approves the request, your organization will be able to download the requested file in Fall 2026.

Request statuses

Troubleshoot why your access request has not yet been approved based on its status in the Dataset catalog ↗.

Status	Description	What to do
Verify domain	Your request was saved. You must verify your domain to submit your request to the publisher.	Admin must complete verification in Organization settings ↗. If you can’t access DNS or have other issues, contact support@learningcommons.org ↗.
Submitted	Your request was submitted. The publisher has not yet started reviewing the request.	No action needed. If the status doesn’t update to “In review” for several weeks, contact support@learningcommons.org ↗.
In review	The publisher is reviewing your request and will contact you about licensing.	Respond promptly to any outreach. If you hear nothing for several weeks, contact the publisher.
Approved	Your organization has access to the publisher’s gated data under your negotiated license terms.	Downloads will be allowed starting Fall 2026. We will contact you when your data is available.
Not approved	Your request was not approved.	Ask the publisher why your request was not approved. Use this information to submit a new request.
Deactivated	Access to this data is no longer active.	Contact the publisher to reactivate access. Deactivation is often due to expired terms, unpaid fees, or license violations. If you hear nothing for several weeks, submit a new request.
Withdrawn	An Admin in your organization withdrew this request.	Submit a new request when your organization is ready.
