This page explains the licensing framework for Knowledge Graph. For the license and attribution that apply to a specific dataset or download, check that dataset’s page in the Dataset catalog. For example, Open + Gated and Gated content are not covered by CC BY 4.0, CC0, or any other open license referenced here, even where other parts of Knowledge Graph are.

Knowledge Graph code is licensed under MIT ↗.

Data

Knowledge Graph datasets are not all licensed the same way. Each dataset (and in some cases, each download within a dataset) is labeled with an access type: Open, Open + Gated, or Gated. That label determines which of the sections below applies.

Access type	What it means	Where the license lives
	Freely usable under an open license, subject to that license’s terms (typically attribution). CC BY 4.0: the majority of Open datasets. Requires attribution, a link to the license, and an indication of whether changes were made. CC0: a smaller number of datasets, where the source organization has waived copyright and related rights. No attribution is legally required, though we credit the source as a courtesy and encourage you to do the same.	Row-level attribution in the relevant dataset
+	Some downloads of the dataset are Open; others are Gated. For example, a curriculum dataset’s Scope and sequence download may be Open while its Instructional materials or Assessment materials are Gated. Building your own Knowledge Graph

If you compile datasets from the catalog into your own Knowledge Graph build, you take on the licensing and attribution obligations of every dataset and download you include. Learning Commons’ role as distributor doesn’t consolidate those into a single license for your build. In practice, this means:

Attribution travels with the data, not with Learning Commons. If your build includes CC BY 4.0 datasets from multiple sources, you’re responsible for carrying forward attribution to each original source, not just to Learning Commons.
Don’t apply one license across a mixed build. A build that combines, say, an Open standards dataset with a Gated curriculum download is not uniformly CC BY 4.0, CC0, or anything else. Each part keeps its own terms as described on its dataset page.
Gated content isn’t yours to redistribute by default. If your build includes any Gated dataset or download, confirm the scope of your access agreement before publishing or redistributing that build.
Check before you ship, not after. Datasets are added and licensing terms can change between releases. Before publishing a derivative build, confirm current license and access-type information with the Dataset catalog.

Dataset catalog licenses

Each Open dataset listed in our catalog has its own license. All Open datasets are included in the comprehensive Knowledge Graph data download listed at the top of the Dataset catalog.
